Don't you love the flute?

What a lovely detail a flute is, that should not be overlooked! This first flute is "Orrefors" by Karl Legarfeld, following is "Victoria" by Juliska, and lastly "Mille Nuits" by Baccarat. Each of these flutes offer a different touch of detail. Beginning with the first flute, it is established by strict modern lines. The Juliska flute is created from hand blown glass, making no two flutes identical. And I will leave you with a splash of color. I love the bonus feature that the amethyst brings to the party. Remember - you can steer away from traditional, while still keeping it spectacular!

Butterflies

I am always looking for inspiration and recently discovered this amazing butterfly bouquet. It was featured in an ad for Neiman Marcus and I fell in love! What a great idea! The butterflies and flowers blend together and it doesn't feel too obvious. I love taking something that could be significant to the bride and incorporating it in such a fun way.

The second photo that I have posted is a simple way to add some personality to basic paper lanterns. I found it on pinterest via Martha Stewart. I think I may use this idea for a baby shower I am planning...or maybe a bridesmaids luncheon...there are lots of possibilities.

Just remember to look for inspiration everywhere and have fun!

We have had a great time celebrating the holidays on Camp Bowie Boulevard, at "Camp Bowie Christmas". The entertainment was great, Santa and his Reinsteer, a Marionette Show, Frosty the Snowman, and more games to play than you could even imagine. If you missed out on it this year, mark your calendars for next December! And now I will leave you with this picture of my two favorite girls, as I head off to plan for 2012.

Personal Champagne & Signature Drinks!

A few fun ideas that we mentioned on Nonstop Nightly, last Tuesday evening were about speciality drinks for hosting a holiday party! These miniature personal champagne bottles would be great served chilled to each guest as they arrive. Have each bottle already opened, and simply add a fun striped paper straw. You then have a fun way to get the party started!

Also, think of a creative signature style cocktail drink that would relate accordingly to your parties theme or color. The signature cocktail shown above is a "Blue Glacier" that we created and named ourselves. You don't have to get too fancy, just think a bit out of the box! To add a bit more to our signature cocktails we used an icicle with a few crystals attached to the end for our stir sticks. You could also add a sugared rim to add a bit more sparkle. I hope these ideas spark a bit of creativity and give your party just the right touch of personality.

Winter Party DIY's

We thought we would share some of the fun DIY elements to our Winter Party table scape from NBC's Nonstop Nightly. There are lots of fun elements for this table that can be easily created at home. When creating the design for the table - we really wanted to use a pewter table linen with a silver charger - but we also needed the charger to show up. We found these cute snowflakes at Target (4 for $1.) and created a wreath to go under the chargers - this really made them pop!

Another great element are the "icey" candle holders. We bought the candles at Albertsons for $1.50, sprayed them with spray adhesive and then rolled them in glitter. They are gorgeous - especially when they are lit!

We also bought some inexpensive icicles and added a little strand of crystals to the end and created some really blingy cocktail stirrers. These are so much fun!

Lastly - we found these cute little nutcrackers and sprayed them silver. Then some silver leaf was applied and they made amazing place card holders - not to mention a fun little favor for the guests.

Katrina & Bryce - A Wedding with a View

This wedding was set at The Cliffs at Possum Kingdom Lake. The ceremony was outdoors and the view was incredible. With a beautiful palette of purples, blushes and corals - the flowers by Lush Couture Floral were amazing!

For the escort card display - each card was tied to an antique key and then hung on a cup rack. Guest could find their table and keep the key as a favor.

The setting was intimate and warm with doors leading from the dining area to a beautifully lit patio and lawn area overlooking the lake.

I wish all my brides could be as adorable as Katrina!

Fursman Foundation

This October our team at Extraordinary Events & Design was given the opportunity to work with a new nonprofit organization, Bill Fursman Foundation, Fall Creek Horse Rescue, for their first bi-annual fundraising event. Romantic Sign-in Table

As I have blogged about before, many brides don't want a traditional guest book. One of my recent weddings wanted both a guest book and something with a little more personality. At the church we used a fabulous photo guest book designed by Bella Bee Photography and then came up with something different for the reception. An amazing eight foot mirrored table from Suite 206 was our starting point. Then we added a fabulous floral arrangement from Out Of The Garden just to set the stage. These great little cards were made using the couples monogram which was custom designed by Anchor Marketing & Design . We found this unique wooden holder that the cards fit into perfectly. The guests could write a personal note to the bride and groom and then the cards were hung on an antique cup rack. Lots of other accessories, candles and floral elements were added to create an amazing overall look. Please enjoy these great photos taken by Bella Bee!

A Beautiful Gift

At one of my recent weddings, the mother of the bride came up with a very thoughtful gift for the bride's attendants. She took the time to find vintage handkerchiefs for each girl in the wedding party. The girls were so in love with their gifts that they wrapped them around the base of the bouquets and carried them down the aisle!

The ceremony and reception were held at The Omni Hotel in Fort Worth with music by High Definition Band. Hurray for Marshmallows!

I came across this fun shortcut for icing cupcakes in the September issue of Real Simple magazine. This is a great no-icing needed method. When there is about three minutes left for your cupcakes to bake, pull them out of the oven and put one marshmallow on the top of each one. Return them to the oven for the remaining time or until the marshmallow is slightly melted but still fluffy.

I love this quick fix when you don't have time to make your own frosting!

An Unexpected Gift

Since fall is here and thoughts of Thanksgiving are beginning to dance in my head - I've been thinking about the blessings in my life. I knew that designing weddings and events would be lots of fun, but I didn't see the unexpected up-side to this career. As the number of brides I have had the good fortune to work with increases, so does the number of friends in my life. I have been lucky to have worked with some amazing people and am continually amazed at the clients who are put in my life. Their hasn't been a "bridezilla" in the bunch and all have been lovely to work with, but some of them become lifetime friends. I know there will always be a close bond with them and I am sad when the wedding is over and I no longer speak with them as frequently. These special brides (and their families) will always have a special place in my heart. For this I am thankful!

One of my adorable couples came up with a cute concept for their save-the-dates. Since the wedding is taking place on her families ranch, the couple decided to take advantage of the beautiful red barn on the property. Of course, during the process, a huge paint fight ensued! The couple made a great save-the-date by using a grouping of these photos - some showing close-ups of paint brushes, paint splattered feet etc... The best part is that the photos say it all! Be creative and have fun!

Summer Cakes

I love yellow! It's such a happy color and it looks great on these cakes. The petals on the first cake were made by cutting fondant shapes with a cookie cutter. By varying the color and sizes it creates an amazing cake! I love simple designs!

The second cake is just fresh and fun! This buttercream iced cake has been coated in crushed marmalade candy. I love the overall texture and color of this cake!

BJ & Amber's Wedding

BJ and Amber Caldwell aren't my average client. They are much more! They are good friends and I was so lucky to get to design their wedding. They wanted a fresh palette of black and white with green accents. They wanted the wedding to reflect their fun loving and somewhat quirky personalities. Since the couple owns Anchor Marketing & Design, all the stationary was custom designed "in house". (They also designed my fabulous web-site.)

The wedding ceremony was held in the Van Cliburn Recital Hall and the reception in the adjacent McDavid Studios - both are part of the Bass Hall complex. One of my favorite things about the wedding was when the Bride walked down the aisle to The Beatles, "Here Comes The Sun".

Music for the ceremony and cocktail hour was provided by Kyle Sherman. (The Kyle Sherman Band is my favorite local band.)

The reception featured yummy catering from Reata Restaurant and wedding cakes were from The Cakery in Southlake.

I made custom lanterns in black and white to hang above the dance floor and above the cake tables which added a custom look to the event. The linens were from La Tavola in Napa and were black beaded organza overlays on the guest tables and black sequins on the cake and sweetheart tables.

DJ and lighting was by AVSD Productions - so much fun to work with!

Nothing would have look finished with the amazing floral designs to pull it all together. Thanks to Donna Smith at Out Of The Garden and her team for a fabulous job.

This was such a fun wedding and will forever be one of my favorites because I was able to design the perfect event for such good friends!

A Party For A Car

I love adding new things to my resume, and my latest event was definitely a first for me. I designed a party for the debut of a new car - yes, the centerpiece was a car! The amazing new Fisker Karma luxury hybrid made its Texas debut yesterday evening at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth. Although yesterday was a hot one, the Terrace lawn made an amazing backdrop for an outdoor party. I brought in seagrass lounge furniture and used very organic colors and materials to help promote a more "green" environment. Pops of purple were used to add splashes of color in the floral arrangements (also the colors of TCU and Frank Kent dealerships,which will be selling the new hybrid). Shady Oaks served amazing hors'douvres and The Kyle Sherman Band played to make the evening complete! The Kyle Sherman has an amazing sound and is an untapped resource here in Fort Worth - please check them out at www.Kyleshermanband.com.

InsideOut

I am the co-founder of a new non-profit here in Fort Worth and I have to tell you all about it! I will start with our mission statement: InsideOut is an organization that creates a model to inspire and motivate young women to discover their true value and become self respecting individuals who are empowered to make life impacting decisions that effect their community and its causes.

As I watch what is on TV and look at magazine covers, it becomes more and more obvious to me that our society is telling teen girls that they have to look and dress in a certain way and that manners are old fashioned and just not important anymore. I couldn't disagree more!

Young girls today need to learn to respect themselves and learn that they deserve respect from others as well. They also need to know that good manners are important and giving back to the community should be a goal.

InsideOut will be hosting a 2 -day conference in February 2011 to help girls realize their true worth. We will be bringing in Christian speakers and music to make the event truly special. Special break-out seminars will include topics like, "Uniquely You", and "Finding Your Style". Their will also be a luncheon, style show and VIP party on Friday night. It is going to be an over-the-top amazing event.

The specific date and location will be announced very soon!

We are going to have to raise quite a bit of money to put on this event and are currently looking for sponsors. If you are interested in helping out financially or as a volunteer (we are going to be putting together committees soon), please email me at julie@insideoutinc.org.

Number Please!

I love creative ways to display table numbers, (or table names for that matter) at the events that I plan. There are so many ways to show some style while giving your guests this information. I want to share these options with you. I found inexpensive frames (in various finishes) that were the right size - mostly 5" x 7". I found many of the frames at Tuesday Morning, Ross and other discount stores. I then purchased chocolate brown spray paint and painted them all the same color. They still needed some "pizzaz" - so I added the gold leaf. (I also added the same gold leaf to some clear glass candle holders, but that's another blog.) They looked great on each table - because each one was a little different.

The second photo uses a similar idea, but each frame is the same and the paper varies on each one. I love these - I found them on weddingbee.com.

So get creative when thinking about every detail!

The Art Of The Bouquet

As the bride makes her way down the aisle to her awaiting groom, she is stunning - all eyes are on her. "She looks amazing!", "Look at that dress!" and other adoring comments are whispered by the guests as she appears to float by. Besides the beautiful dress, the bouquet is part of the overall look - so it's important to enhance the look with your bouquet. There's nothing worse than a beautiful bride with an ugly bouquet. Yes, I said it - and it happens too often. A good floral designer knows how to guide her bride to a style and look that works well with her gown.

I've posted a couple of photos of bouquets that I love. One of the main things that I love about them is their unique stem wraps. These give texture and a little personality to the flowers. They can also help add a "hint" of the weddings theme. So put a lot of thought into designing your bouquet and make sure that it adds elegance to your gown and doesn't overpower it.

Add A Little Height

When I am creating table-scapes or displays for home or an event, I love to add height. Whether its the middle of the dining table, a bookcase or a food display on the kitchen island, things are just more interesting when they are on different levels. You can use lots of different things to accomplish this depending on the feel or theme you are going for. Books are one of the easiest ways to get this look, just lay them down and use them as a pedestal. I recently painted several books glossy white to be used as props on a sign in table. I also love to use little wooden pedestals to add interest and height. These work so well to display floral, food, candle or accessories. I have found these at Pottery Barn and World Market.

Another fun idea is to cut rings (bark included) from a tree branch. I am even having some of these "hollowed" out so they can be used as floral containers for an outdoor wedding. So - use your imagination to make your display or table-scape more interesting!

Do You Want Marital Bliss?

Who doesn't want marital bliss? I mean - really? Well, while your dreaming about it - you can at least serve it at your reception or shower. While drinke I have talked a lot about a signature drink - what about something cute to serve it in? I love this photo that shows how a cute vintage dispenser can help play up your theme. I completely believe that the details are what makes your event special! Those are the things that make your guests talk about it for weeks. By adding the custom label, coordinating ribbon and the cute drink flags - this couple hit a home run! A custom label is easy to do - and it lets the guest know what is being served! More Food Glorious Food!

I have to say that I have a couple of favorites when it comes to catering! One of my recent brides chose Food Glorious Food from Dallas as their caterer. Oh my gosh! It was sooooo good! They passed hors'd ouvres during the cocktail hour and set up a southern antipasto station that was available all evening. It was a beautiful display of meats, gourmet cheeses and olives, toast points, bread sticks and on and on! In the reception they chose five different chef performance stations. The first station was Mac n Cheese martini's which was based with a creamy macaroni with three cheese sauce with any combination of the following toppings: herbed infused panko, applewood smoked bacon, lemon garlic rotisserie chicken, and finally wild mushroom and braised shallot ragout. It was beyond yummy!

The next station was an oriental station which served pad thai in small take out boxes and chopsticks. Then their was the panini station - which offered smoked ham, mozzarella and roasted red pepper with fresh basil pesto. Their was also a veggie panini with tomato, asiago and spinach with olive tapanade.

Another station was the republic of tex-mex. Hand formed tortillas prepared tableside on a flatbed griddle surrounded with mexican tiles. It was accompanied by pico de gallo and gaucamole. You could choose from chicken or beef and it was made to order!

The final station was my hand-down favorite! Crab cakes benedict! I can't event describe the yummi-ness! It just melted in your mouth - amazing!

The bride and groom wanted to share a variety of different foods for their guest to experience and it was a huge success! The service was amazing - very helpful and unobtrusive! Working with them made my job as a planner easier!

Where The Boys Are

I recently designed and coordinated a wedding for a fun group. The wedding and reception were in the Bass Hall complex - which happens to be really close to The Flying Saucer! If you know Fort Worth at all...then you're bound to know about The Saucer. So, you say - what's wrong with that? The problem is keeping all the wedding party at the venue and not at the bar! At this particular wedding, the photographer was taking photos of all the guys outside the building. Someone had the great idea to take some of the photos at The Flying Saucer. This was code for - take photos of us while we drink! I act like it was a problem, but it wasn't - and the photos turned out great. The only problem was when the photographer returned without the guys...

They made it back with plenty of time and the rest, as they say, is history!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rule!

One of the most fun things about a wedding reception is the groom's cake. This is the one place that the rules don't apply! Even with a chic, sophisticated wedding - it's okay to have a little fun with this cake.

A recent bride and groom chose the cakes for the wedding. They even matched - how sweet is that? NOT! Can you say BORING! But little did the groom know that we were secretly designing a different cake for him as a surprise. After a little thought - the bride remembered that he loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when he was younger. And an idea was born! We went to Frosted Art Bakery in Dallas and Bronwen Weber designed this fun Michaelangelo cake. He is popping out of a pizza of course! We then stacked the cake on top of pizza boxes. The cake turned out amazing and the groom was completely surprised! Everyone loved the cake and as you can guess was a great topic of conversation!

Good Enough To Eat!

These cakes are fabulous!!!! Both of these cakes were in the latest edition of Instyle Weddings and I had to share them. The inspiration for the white cake came from a bride's dress and I think it is so amazing!!!!! It very simple and VERY CHIC! Love, love, love it! It was made by Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica. The "jewels" are made of sugar and the cake is dusted with charcoal and silver luster! Did I mention that I LOVE this cake!

The second cake is also amazing! This cake is very memorable and will be talked about for quite a while. It has a very sophisticated look for a cake that looks like bark. I think it looks rich and the figs are a beautiful and classic touch! This cake was made by Perfect Endings of Napa.

Think outside the box if you want your cake to make a statement!

A Fort Worth Tradition

If you have lived in Fort Worth for very long and pay attention to the social "scene", then you know what a Debutante is. This long-standing tradition is alive and well and celebrated each fall and winter season. This of course, means lots of parties! I designed a fabulous event for three cousins that all made their bows this season.

The setting was the amazing Fort Worth Club and at least 750 guests attended. Talk about pressure to create an amazing event! With the help of amazing vendors, the club was transformed into an elegant lighted Christmas Ball. Guests entered through a candle-lit walkway of birch and snow, and were then welcomed into the Terrace room by soft pink light and over-the-top floral arrangements. The fountain overflowed with white orchids while the chandeliers were glistening with iced branches. Everything was lit with candle light and accented with a variety of white blooms. A special cake was displayed for each girl and each featured a stack of 3 fondant covered gift boxes from their favorite designers. As guests entered the large Horizon Ballroom they were greeted by a lighted truss covered dance floor surrounded by white banquettes and clear ghost chairs. The walls were lit with blue while snowflakes covered the enormous ceiling. Guests were treated to lots of fantastic food and drink from amazing lighted bars. The mood was festive and guests dance all night to the music of The Project.

I recently did a wedding for a very special bride. We had been working together on her wedding for almost a year and during the process, the bride, her mother and I got to be very good friends. (I will post photos of the wedding soon - it was incredible!) Anyway - I wanted to do something special for her on her wedding day - so I had a graphic artist create this "movie" poster. The posters were hung in the lighted movie poster boxes outside the Maddox Muse building in Fort Worth. When the wedding party and guests arrived they were greeted with these great posters! The bride and groom were blown away! I loved being able to do something special for such special clients!

Since the Holidays are fast approaching, I am always looking for fun little treats. Here is an easy little appetizer from Southern Living. I tried this one out and thought it was super easy and really yummy!

Cream Cheese and Olive Pecan Bites:

Stir together 3-oz. softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup finely chopped pimiento-stuffed spanish olives, 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh chives, and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Spread onto 40 larges toasted pecan halves; top with 40 large pecan halves, forming sandwiches.

Unique Florals

I love flowers! I love lots of fresh flowers at receptions and I also love unique ideas! These photos came from the most recent edition of Martha Stewart Weddings. The idea of hanging chandeliers or shades above the guest tables is a great way to add interest to your party. So of course when I saw this photo with this suspended branch with flowers attached - I fell in love again! This makes an amazing statement piece and is a great example of thinking outside the box.

The other photo is a beautiful bouquet. The things I liked about are the tiny feathers that have been mixed in. We have seen a lot of arrangements with white ostrich feathers, but this use of feathers is under-stated and classic. I also love the simple velvet ribbon tied on instead of the very formal satin wrapped stems.

Everyone is doing a signature cocktail these days at their party or reception. Don't get me wrong - I love the signature cocktail. But now where will the trend take us? How about a "flight" of signature drinks. Vermilion, a NYC restaurant has been serving these and it can easily be adapted for a reception. The "flight" consists of four shot-sized drinks. They are just mini-versions of your favorite drinks. They can be served at the bar or tray passed during your cocktail hour. I found this fun idea in the latest edition of Modern Bride. Planning this one was truly a long distance affair. The groom is in the United States Marine Corps stationed in California and the bride was finishing her Masters Degree in Mississippi. Since my degree is in Interior Design, I thought I would take this opportunity to promote my upcoming workshop, "Designing The Texas Home". Even though I am a full time wedding and event planner, I still work on design projects when I get the chance.

This is the fourth year of this Signature Series Workshop held at Wildcatter Ranch. I have done all the design work for this fantastic ranch and love being able to lead these workshops.

Highlights of this year's workshop will be:

*We will also take a short field trip to look at one of my nearby multi-million dollar projects.

I have given lots of ideas for fun signature cocktails, but this time its not about the drink itself. How about a fun garnish for your drink? Something New For The Flower Girl

Flower girls are one of the cutest things at a wedding! For this wedding in Santa Fe, we wanted these twin girls to carry something more unique than a basket with petals. The floral designer, Artichokes & Pomegranates created these flower "wands". I was really pleased at how they turned out and the flower girls LOVED them. It was unique and adorable!

Yeah, I know snowflakes on eyelashes and whiskers on kittens are adorable - but what about the things that annoy you? I generally try to "pay it forward" - you know - do the right thing, but somethings just get under your skin and really bug you! I'm not talking about random shootings and drug overdoses (although these are also things I don't like), but little things that you just can't let go of. So today my blog is not about parties and events, but just my venting about things that irk me. Feel free to comment and add your list too!

These are in no particular order of annoy-ingness.

1. Don't ask me if my Louis Vuitton handbag is real - miss checker at the grocery store!

2. I don't ever want to hear you eat your food. Close your mouth and don't talk till your finished. And by the way - if you are chewing gum - you should be the only one that knows about it!

3. Unless we're related, don't double dip. You might as well just lick that piece of bread and pass it to me.

4. DO NOT DRIVE SLOW IN THE FAST LANE! THAT WOULD BE THE LEFT LANE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO OBVIOUSLY DON'T KNOW! (whew - my blood pressure went up just mentioning that one.....road rage?????

5. Don't remind me of the obvious things. Like how many drinks I've had, how to drive the car or that I may have gained a few pounds. Duh! I already know!

6. Don't wait until we have finished lunch and I am two blocks away to call me and tell me that I have food in my teeth. Seriously.

7. Don't send me emails that ask me to forward it to my friends. Specially the ones that try to make me feel guilty if I don't. Because they do make me feel guilty - because I don't forward them.

8. I don't care how big your car stereo is - I don't want to listen to it. Turn it down or roll up your window!

9. Girls - I don't want to see your underwear! Any of it - ever. That trend is gone. H-E-L-L-O...it's called class - try it! In fact this applies to you guys out there too!

10. Karaoke- there's a reason you don't have a record deal. Enough said!

What Is A Trend

Some trends are easy to follow. We see them in fashion, home furnishings and architecture. But some trends are a little harder to put your finger on. I admit that I try to be up on the latest and greatest new ideas. I was recently reading an article in an industry magazine about the latest trends in the event world. Every industry leader that was quoted gave their list of things that are "in" and what is definitely "out". They were interesting to read and full of good ideas, but a couple of them contradicted each other. This really made me think - we can follow trends and try to be at the top of the game, but in the long run it really depends on what you love and what makes you happy on your big day. Just because someone says that backlit bars are out, doesn't mean it still won't be a big hit in your "nightclub" lounge. If it works for you - then don't just dismiss it because someone says its so last year.

My point is - even the "big dogs" list different things on their lists of whats "in" and whats "out". So if you are a trendsetter - go for it! I love to be cutting edge too! But don't push aside what you love just to be trendy! Remember - it's your big event!

I love creating beautiful spaces and using creative lights is a great way to start! Chandeliers have long been the staple of a glamourous space, but sometimes you have to think outside the box. These photos show some great examples of what can be achieved when you really get creative. Great simple shades over a bar can make an elegant statement, while a unique grouping of moroccan lanterns creates an exotic atmosphere. Paper lanterns are inexpensive and can become extraordinary when grouped en masse. Cocktail Anyone?

I thought it would be good to start off Monday morning with a cocktail - well at least talking about a cocktail. As a coordinator I am always on the prowl for a great signature cocktail. I came across this recipe that is sort of a fruit-forward twist on the margarita. A signature drink doesn't have to be original - it just needs an original name to make it yours!

Here is the recipe for the Cactus Berry Cocktail

1 oz Reposado

3 oz Folanari Shiraz

1 oz Cointreau

2 oz Sour Mix

1 oz Lemon-lime soda

Splash of lime juice

Combine all the ingredients except for the lemon-lime soda in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and pour into a cocktail glass. Top with lemon-lime soda. Garnish with a salted rim and slice of lime.

The bakery came across my radar because they make beautiful cakes for weddings and other events, but they offer so much more! Owner Catherine Ruehle has even developed sugar free, gluten free and vegan menus. There is literally something for everyone. I think these Wish Lanterns are so beautiful! They were traditionally used in Asia for celebrations and festivals. I am often in awe of bakers. I can't believe the things that they can do with a cake! Wedding cakes, groom's cakes and even birthday cakes have become works of art. If you can imagine it - they can turn it into reality in the form of a cake. We are lucky in Fort Worth to have several great bakers. One of the best is Wendy Collinsworth, owner of Haute Cakes and Cookies. Wendy is the daughter of a New Orleans pasty chef and culinary arts instructor and literally grew up in the kitchen. She brings more than 25 years of creative artistry to the table - or should I say oven!

As an event planner, I go through LOTS of candles. I believe you can almost never have too many candles! Seriously - I love them. The Two Dress Trend

One of the biggest trends for the bride is having two dresses. One for the walk down the aisle and one for the reception. But lets face it....two dresses equals two price tags! The average bride can't afford to purchase two separate dresses. So here are some ideas for the girl who wants it - but for a little less dinero.

Changing the look of a dress can be as simple as changing the sash on your dress to something with some color and maybe a great crystal brooch for the reception. Yeah, I know this isn't a big change but you can show a little of your personality this way.

Another answer is to wear a shrug with your dress for the ceremony. Removing it for the reception can reveal a beautiful strapless gown and a completely different look. There are many dresses available with a jacket or shrug. Some of my favorites can be found at Pronovias.

The most amazing idea is the dress with the detachable skirt. These are harder to find, but they are out there. A beautiful long skirt can be removed to reveal a shorter dress that is ready to party!

Just use your imagination and you can turn one dress into two!

This is pure elegance! I have seen some great party tents but I absolutely love this one. There are definitely times when a tent is the only option to fit your venue and guest count! If you are going to do it - do it big! This tent has a great "lounge" feel with casual seating and the added dark floor dresses it up. The glass cocktail tables and black crystal chandeliers add some "bling". (Love the bling!)

So if you think you can't do "chic" because your reception is in a tent - think again! Anything is possible with the right "vision" and of course a little money!

Colorful Containers

Lots of brides today want their flowers to be a little different. A great way to accomplish this is by using unique containers. The containers themselves can become the focus and the flowers can be simplified. Many floral designers have quite a few choices for containers from small to gigantic! Out of the Garden in Grapevine warehouses a large variety including everything from colored glass and ceramic to huge terra cotta urns on iron stands. If your floral designer doesn't have what you want - then go shopping! Great vases can be found everywhere. The photos I am using are from Global Views, but Z Gallerie, Pier 1 and even Tuesday Morning can be great resources. Some floral designers will work with you if you want to buy the vases and don't want to keep them. They might be willing to split the cost or even buy them and rent them to you. You won't know if you don't ask. Get creative and add some interest to your table!

What's On The Menu?

Menu cards have become an art form. Not only are they a great way to let guests know what's on the menu, but they can be made in a variety of unique shapes and sizes. They can also showcase the couples monogram, theme and color scheme. They can usually be found tucked into a napkin or simply placed on a charger. Round cut menus fit nicely into the center of a dinner plate or charger.

Menu cards aren't just for the plated dinner - I like to use them anytime I use seating cards. Even if there is a buffet, it lets the guests know what is being served. It's also just a great way to personalize the table a little more.

Even if you are having a small dinner party at home - menu cards are a great touch and will make the party feel extra special!

Do you dance to the beat of a different drum? Looking for ways to let your personality shine through in your wedding? I get this a lot...."I want traditional...but different". Your flowers are a way to let your creative, inner-self show during the big event. I love this bridal bouquet because it is traditional but also very different. The single feather is fun without going to extremes. And the colors are gorgeous and rich! It says "I may be chic & beautiful, but I am also daring and lots of fun"!

Worst Wedding Toasts

I thought that since it was Friday, a little humor would be a good end to the week. I wanted to share some the worst wedding toasts from The Knot. The wedding toast is when the bride and groom's friends and family can express their fondness for the couple. They usually wish them well, tell a funny story or impart words of wisdom. Sometimes alcohol, nerves or downright disapproval of the couple can ruin this happy moment. Here were some of my favorites! (Of course by favorite - I mean these are things I hope to never hear at one of my clients weddings!)

1. "I attended a wedding where the best man commented on how the bride used to work at Hooters (which her family didn't know about) and how he was jealous of the groom for 'bagging' her."

2."A friend of mine from college got married, and his best man said in his speech: 'Finally John has found someone with low enough self esteem to marry him'".

3. "At my cousin's wedding, the best man ended his toast by saying he wanted the groom to know that he'd be there for him at his next wedding when this one didn't work out."

4. "My cousin gave a horrible toast at her younger sister's wedding a few years ago. She began by saying that she never like her sister's new husband throughout high school and that 'today he's still at the level of slightly below the scum on the bottom of a dirty waste pond.'"

5. 'The best man at a wedding I was in said during his toast, 'Congratulations to the new parents!" No one except a select few knew the bride was pregnant - not even her parents!

Fun Signature Cocktail

A signature cocktail has been the trend at parties and wedding receptions for a while. Some are great - and some, well they're just trying too hard to be unique and miss the boat on taste. I'm not one to drink some ultra sweet concoction in a martini glass - that has absolutely nothing to do with a martini. So when I came across this idea - I thought it was a good one. I actually found this in Country Living Magazine, but it could be dressed up to fit any party. It only takes 3 items which makes it easy to do. First, pick up some Looza's sweet mango nectar. ( You can find it in grocery stores) Then pour the juice into an ice tray and freeze. The one they used was by Ice Kabobs. (Surlatable.com for $8.) Add the swizzle stick into a glass of sparkling wine and you've got a bellini that makes itself as the ice melts. (They chose prosecco which is one of my favorites)

I love bellinis! You can also just freeze the cubes and add your own swizzle stick if you want a dressier take on it. Wow - I think I want one of these - soon!

I sometimes find it hard to remember how to set a formal table. I keep a photo for reference on my laptop for those times! Most people are probably faced more often with the problem of dining at a formal table than with setting one. Always remember that the silver is placed in the order of its use, with the implement to be used first farthest from the plate. So start from the outside and work your way in. This photo will help you identify the items on a formal table and will give you confidence at your next formal dinner.

Great Girls Weekend!

I don't know about anyone else, but I am a little tired of the trashy bachelorette party. Yeah, I know sometimes you just have to go there - but here is a fun alternative. Gather your gal pals and "mosey" on out to Wildcatter Ranch. This beautiful resort is located on the Brazos River just an hour and a half from Fort Worth. There is so much to do.

Sage spa can offer a great selection of ways to pamper the whole group, while the "city slickers" in the group can try their hand riding horses or shooting skeet. At the end of the day, unwind with a glass of wine and an amazing meal at the award winning steakhouse. Their is so much more to do - you'll just have to visit their website for all the details! Oh, and did I mention that the guest rooms are extraordinary! (I should know, I did all the design work for the ranch!)

Fresh Summer Color

While I was looking through my new Southern Accents magazine, I found this photo of an outdoor party. I absolutely love the royal blue and white with the splashes of apple green. Of course, this makes a lovely setting for a garden party, but it would make an amazing feel for a reception. Can't you just picture lots of white paper lanterns, dramatic pin spots on each table - the mix of blue and white china with some crystal candlesticks. You can find blue and white vases, urns and dinner ware everywhere right now! If you are tired of pink (not that there's anything wrong with that, I will forever love pink) and want to express your sense of style and taste, you might want to consider a fresh color scheme. I love this eclectic and classic look!

Beautiful Florals!

The new Inside Weddings (Spring 2009) has some beautiful floral ideas. I thought I would share some of them. I love designs with branches, but I particularly loved this grouping of curly willow and orchids. We have seen lots of glass cylinders with willow, but I love how this one seems to "grow" out of the table. It really makes a statement. Of course I always love the strung orchids and candle holders hanging from the thicker manzanita branches. Very chic and romantic.

The other photo shows a glass cylinder filled with inexpensive white chrysanthemums, but to add a beachy feel they added in some small white starfish. It is simple and elegant and not too "in your face" with the seashell theme. I love them!
